At least two Acadiana legislators are expected to qualify next week for a race to replace state Sen. Don Cravins Sr., D-Opelousas. Cravins was elected mayor of Opelousas on Sept. 30. His senate term expires in 2008. His son, state Rep. Donald Cravins Jr., D-Opelousas, and state Rep. Wilfred Pierre, D-Lafayette, are expected to vie for the Senate District 24 race.

Qualifying at the Lafayette Parish Courthouse, 800 S. Buchanan St., for the special Dec. 9 election for Senate District 24 will be from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, and from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, said Louis Perret, Lafayette Parish clerk of courts.

Cravins Jr. was elected in 2004 to represent state House District 40, which was left open by the death of Charles Hudson. He is an attorney practicing law in Lafayette.

Pierre has served as representative of state House District 44 since 1991. He is owner and manager of a janitorial company in Lafayette. Pierre's term in the House expires in 2008 and he cannot run again because of term limits.

District 40 incorporates St. Landry Parish, while District 44 includes Lafayette Parish. Senate District 24 includes parts of both of their current House districts.
